Dispersed storage → AtoM + Archivematica

Nelson Mandela Foundation

The Nelson Mandela Foundation centralised its digital archival holdings on an integrated AtoM and Archivematica platform after years of difficult audiovisual storage. Recordings had arrived in formats ranging from VHS to DVD; because the Foundation lacked playback equipment, an outside provider digitised analogue material and maintained an external server, while access copies remained on CDs and DVDs. The resulting archive was spread across different media and locations, making retrieval slow and frustrating. AtoM now provides archival description and online access, paired with Archivematica for long-term digital preservation. Audiovisual archivist Zanele Riba's account also shows that technical access does not remove rights constraints: donated broadcasts, concert footage and recordings involving third parties remain subject to contractual, performer, copyright or privacy restrictions. The source does not give an exact implementation year.
