NAAIRS modernisation → AtoM

National Archives and Records Service of South Africa (NARSSA)

After implementing AtoM during the 2017 revamp of South Africa's National Automated Archival Information Retrieval System (NAAIRS), NARSSA joined the Department of Arts and Culture and the State Information Technology Agency in developing a single central AtoM instance for national and provincial government archives. The system went live in November 2019, with provincial repositories receiving access from April 2020. Officials from national and provincial archives contributed to development and user-acceptance testing, while super users received training to support colleagues locally. Hosted within the government's private-cloud infrastructure, the shared service was designed to standardise description, enable electronic contributions to NAAIRS and prepare repositories to ingest digitised and born-digital records. The notice documents a national platform rollout, while stopping short of claiming that every province completed migration.
