Adopted Islandora

American Philosophical Society

The American Philosophical Society adopted Islandora to improve the stewardship of its culturally sensitive Indigenous collections. A grant-funded effort inventoried more than 130,000 images across the collections, and Islandora's flexibility allowed the archive to apply cultural protocols and restricted-access review to sensitive materials rather than exposing everything by default. The move gave APS a standards-based open-source platform for describing and providing appropriate access to Indigenous archival material. A US independent-research-library example of adopting open-source Islandora with careful, culturally aware access controls.
