Adopted Mukurtu

Penobscot Nation

The Penobscot Nation's cultural heritage portal, Penobscot Collections, runs on Mukurtu CMS — the open-source, community-driven content management system built for Indigenous cultural heritage. The Nation adopted Mukurtu alongside the Local Contexts Traditional Knowledge (TK) Labels to reassert Penobscot authority over collections held in outside institutions: the platform provides granular, protocol-based access so community members can view digitally returned items and add their own stories and knowledge to them. The live catalogue is served from the Mukurtu theme and splash modules, and the project pairs digital repatriation with the TK Labels system to convey ongoing community rights over dispersed material.
