Legacy databases → ArchivesSpace

College of Staten Island, CUNY

In 2018 the Archives and Special Collections of the College of Staten Island (CUNY) began consolidating a scattered mix of legacy metadata into a single locally-hosted ArchivesSpace instance. Folder-level description sat in a flat-file database with some digitised images, while most collection- and series-level information existed only as narrative documents in PDF and HTML with minimal structured metadata. The project — carried out, as the team put it, 'in times of austerity' with limited staff and budget — replaced these outdated systems to improve metadata consistency and give users proper web access. Published in a peer-reviewed case study, it is a realistic model for smaller academic archives migrating heterogeneous legacy data with modest resources.
