Universidade de Aveiro
Under the iForal project, researchers at the Universidade de Aveiro in Portugal used eScriptorium and the Kraken engine to build an automated handwritten-text-recognition workflow for medieval Portuguese manuscripts. The work targeted historical charters, developing layout-recognition and transcription models to speed up the labour-intensive task facing paleographers. It illustrates how open-source, self-hosted HTR can be trained on a tightly defined historical corpus to make hard-to-read manuscripts machine-readable. A Portuguese example of applying open-source HTR to a specialised medieval corpus.
