In-house DSpace 6.3 → DSpace Express

University of South Africa (UNISA)

After 150 years as a cornerstone of South African higher education, the University of South Africa moved to secure the long-term sustainability of its UnisaIR repository. To shed the burden of maintaining on-premise servers and security patching, Unisa migrated 22,854 items from an in-house DSpace 6.3 instance to Atmire's SaaS-based DSpace Express. The transition reorganised the repository to mirror Unisa's academic colleges and its large open-distance-education collections, added single sign-on, and deployed visual statistics to analyse global engagement. A clear South African example of moving from self-hosted to managed DSpace.
