Kraken CLI → eScriptorium

École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE-PSL)

The École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE, part of PSL), together with Inria, is the institutional birthplace of eScriptorium — driving the shift from the command-line Kraken engine to a graphical, collaborative, open-source web platform for handwritten text recognition. Developed to serve diverse and difficult historical corpora that general-purpose OCR cannot handle, eScriptorium is built around openness and collaboration, and is anchored in the RESILIENCE European research infrastructure so that it remains free, open-source and continuously improved for historical studies. The origin story of the platform that now underpins much of the sector's move away from proprietary HTR.
